Abstract

Vascular structures visualization with enhanced contrast is an important objective of modern endoscopic imaging, as it facilitates the detection of pathological changes and reduces the risk of vascular injury during surgical procedures. This study presents a mathematical model of a multilayered mucosal tissue that accounts for tissue morphology, the distribution of blood vessels at different depths, the spectral optical properties of the major tissue chromophores, and the image formation process in an endoscopic imaging system. Based on the proposed model, the influence of illumination system parameters, including the central wavelengths, spectral bandwidths, angle of incidence, and relative intensities of the illumination channels on vascular contrast was investigated. A method for selecting the optimal parameters of a multispectral illumination system was proposed based on the analysis of spectral differences between vascularized and non-vascularized tissues. Based on the modeling results, an experimental test bench equipped with light-emitting diodes operating at the selected wavelengths was developed. Using this setup, an experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different combinations of illumintation channel intensities on vascular contrast, confirming that multispectral illumination optimization improves the visualization of vascular structures. The obtained results can be used in the development of multispectral endoscopic systems for non-invasive diagnostics and enhanced visualization of the mucosal microvascular network.
