The effect of subpicosecond laser irradiation on wound healing in a rat skin flap excision model

Abstract

Lasers have proven to be an effective tool for the treatment of atrophic and hypertrophic scars, as well as for the correction of other aesthetic imperfections. However, laser treatment is still associated with thermal damaging effects which can lead to the severe inflammation. For this reason, these methods can be applied only after the mature scar has formed. The use of laser pulses with durations shorter than all the characteristic relaxation times in tissues (> 20-40 ps) makes it possible to eliminate the thermal effects on the tissue and, at the same time, to stimulate the growth of biological markers of remodeling. This opens up opportunities to stimulate remodeling process even during wound healing. Therefore, the aim of this research was to study the effect of subpicosecond laser irradiation on wound healing.
Home-made subpicosecond laser system that generated pulses with a duration of 25 ps at the repetition rate of 677 kHz in the spectral range from 1565 to 1575 nm was used. We studied wound healing in 12 laboratory male rats: 4 in the control group, 4 in group 1 (irradiation with an average power 290 mW), 4 in group 2 (irradiation with an average power 210 mW). Wound edges were treated six times with a scanning speed of 1 mm/s on the 1st, 3rd and 5th day after wound formation. In the control group wound size decreased by 35% on day 7, in groups 1 and 2, by 41,4% and 34,9%, respectively.
