Development and validation of a Russian-made NDIR gas analyzer NGAP‑1 for CO₂ and H₂O flux measurements by the Eddy Covariance technique

Abstract

An experimental prototype of an open-path four-channel NDIR gas analyzer, NGAP-1, has been developed. It measures CO₂ and H₂O concentrations and serves as a Russian equivalent of the LI-Cor LI-7500A instrument, designed for ecological and climatic monitoring using the eddy covariance method. The device employs an original signal processing algorithm based on analysis of the integral pulse structure, with polynomial calibration and temperature compensation operating in the range from −30 to +50 °C. Tests carried out in the climatic chamber of Bauman Moscow State Technical University between September 2025 and February 2026 demonstrated the mechanical robustness of the device at temperatures as low as −30 °C. Comparison with the reference LI-7500A showed a high degree of linear correlation: the Pearson correlation coefficient reached 0.89 for CO₂ and 0.96 for H₂O. A certificate of registration has been obtained for the developed software. The obtained characteristics confirm the gas analyzer’s capability to provide continuous measurements of greenhouse gas fluxes at carbon polygons.
