Raman Spectroscopy for Evaluating the Effect of a Paste Based on Allogeneic Hydroxyapatite on the Enamel of Bovine Molars

Abstract
This paper presents the results of applying Raman spectroscopy to evaluate the effect of a remineralizing toothpaste based on hydroxyapatite (HAP) on the enamel of bovine molars. The objects of study were bovine molars (Bos taurus) located on a post mortem removed lower jaw (mandible). Eight teeth, previously cleaned of plaque, were measured. The enamel was examined at 8 different points using Raman spectroscopy and chemometric analysis. The study revealed spectral differences in bovine dental enamel before and after application of the HAP based paste, which are associated with B type substitution in hydroxyapatite during the remineralization process with the tested paste, as well as with the restoration of microcracks in the tooth enamel.
