Abstract
Modern digital monitoring methods show that camera traps, thermal imaging drones, and bioacoustic recorders have undeniable advantages in surveying wild animal populations. The use of camera traps demonstrates high accuracy of species identification (in the range from 83.4% to 97.9%), and deep learning methods can reduce the work on manual image classification by 98%. Thermal imaging drones can provide density estimates comparable to camera traps, and their accuracy is 43-96% higher than that of human observers. Acoustic recorders can achieve a 95% detection probability for vociferous species. Camera traps provide continuous recording of several species, but require lengthy image processing; unmanned aerial vehicles conduct rapid large-scale surveys, but face problems with flight time and weather conditions; and acoustic recorders effectively track species using voice behavior. Environmental factors such as habitat type, temperature, and seasonal changes affect the effectiveness of modern methods and equipment.
