ROUND TABLE: Patterns of natural and artificial intelligence: basic differences

Abstract

Consciousness and mind are emergent properties of the system whole, which means that they can arise on different substrate basis: both protein and silicon. The cells of the brain are separately deprived of consciousness, and therefore can be replaced by elementary mechanisms. These are the arguments of the supporters of “strong” AI. But it can be argued that natural and artificial intelligence differ not only in substrate, but also in organization. D.Dennett argues that they are built from opposing hierarchical principles. Natural intelligence is organized from the bottom up, which is compared to the market economy. The artificial intelligence — from top to bottom, like a planned economy. In natural intelligence, at the neural level, processes similar to natural selection are performed, differing from Darwinian selection only at a higher rate. Neurons of the brain are semi-autonomous single-celled organisms that are forced to obtain energy and nutrition by competing with other neurons. There is no such need for user-powered AI systems. Dennett’s assertion that each neuron is a complete single-celled organism can be used to draw more radical conclusions, in line with the concepts of A.Binet and J.Piaget. The basis of neural activity is the behavioral patterns of the simplest microorganisms, which is reproduced in the schemes of thought operations. Therefore, the bit of human intelligence is given not by the binary code "1-0", "signal-lack of signal", but by such basic demarcations for microorganisms as "organism-environment", "inside-outside", "inclusion in-eruption from". Similar configurations are tracked in patterns of logical and mathematical intuition.
