Detection of veterinary antibiotics in water and soil using spectral approaches

Abstract

The increasing pollution of natural environments poses a serious threat to ecosystem stability. Consequently, developing methods for the quantitative and qualitative determination of broadspectrum antibiotics in natural systems is an urgent task. The spectral characteristics of three widely used veterinary antibiotics (tylosin, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline) were investigated. All three antibiotics exhibit distinct absorption bands in the UV region. These bands were resolved through mathematical processing against the broad, monotonically decreasing absorption spectrum typical of organic
components in natural environments. Antibiotic concentrations were determined based on either the absorption band area or the absorbance value at a fixed wavelength using preconstructed calibration curves. For detecting concentrations of ciprofloxacin below 5 mg/L fluorescence spectroscopy was employed. However, due to the partial overlap between the antibiotics emission band and the fluorescence signal of natural organic matter in water and soil, this approach proved insufficiently selective. To isolate the contribution of ciprofloxacin, synchronous fluorescence spectra were measured at a constant wavelength difference (Δλ). The antibiotics concentration was determined based on the peak area in the UV range of the synchronous fluorescence spectrum. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach in determining antibiotics concentration, highlighting its potential for environmental monitoring.
