ROUND TABLE: "Wave and Stone..." (On the 100th Anniversary of the Creation of Quantum (Matrix) Mechanics)
Michael M. Stolnitz
Abstract
The prehistory and history of the creation of the matrix version of quantum mechanics by Werner Heisenberg in 1925 are considered. The philosophical premises that led to this event are discussed. A contrast is made with the wave mechanics developed by Erwin Schrödinger (1926) and the discovery of the equivalence of these seemingly opposite approaches to the description of the microworld is described. The philosophical and methodological conclusions of this episode for the subsequent development of physics are discussed.
